ResoNix Super Max Mega Pro CLD Squares Constrained Layer Damper Sound Deadener

The name isn’t the only thing that is silly about the ResoNix Super Max Mega Pro CLD Squares, the performance is as well. What do you do when you already have the best Constrained Layer Damper on the market? You get silly with it.

ResoNix Super Max Mega Pro CLD Squares are a constrained layer damper sound deadener product comprised of butyl rubber and aluminum. It is adhered to panels of the car to lower structure-borne vibration and resonance for a lower noise floor and a better foundation to build a sound system off of. What makes it different from our standard ResoNix CLD Squares is the thickness of the aluminum constraining layer. On the original CLD Squares it is 4-mil thick. On our Super Mega Max Pro CLD Squares, we tripled it and stepped it up to 12-mil thick. A stronger and stiffer constraining layer means better damping performance. The SAE J1637 test results show the differences between the original ResoNix CLD Squares, and the Mega CLD Squares. The Mega CLD Squares have a slightly higher Composite Loss Factor than the original CLD Squares, but it also has a MUCH wider bell curve on the Composite Loss Factor Scale. This means much higher performance at higher temperatures, which is always the struggle in the automotive environment.

Our ResoNix CLD Squares can be used to treat resonance and vibration in many different applications. It is most commonly used on the following…

Door Skins – Door Panels – Trunk Lids – Hatches – Rear Decks – Rear Deck Cover Panels – Roof Skins – Wheel Wells – Wheel Liners – and More!

Recommended Amount Of ResoNix CLD Squares Sound Deadener

We get emails regarding this often. The problem is, every application and situation is different. Every panel is different, every car is different, and everyone’s end goals are different. With our Reference Information & Guide section, we try to give you as much information as possible in order to help you make the most informed decision possible. But to make it very quick and simple, in our shop, we almost never do less than 60% coverage on panels that require treatment. This includes door skins and panels, rear decks, roofs, quarter panels, trunks, interior plastic trim, and more. In cases where we are just trying to achieve the best end result possible, we aim for nearly 100% coverage. We figure if we are doing it, we may as well do it once and do it right.

A video about our original ResoNix CLD Squares Sound Deadener

An excerpt from our sound deadener Reference Information & Guide page

A Constrained Layer Damper works by using a viscoelastic layer (the butyl) and a constraining layer (the aluminum) to convert mechanical energy (the vibration of a panel) into heat via the viscoelastic properties of butyl while the constraining layer helps the panel keep its shape and resist deformation.  The primary way that CLD achieves this is through shear forces in the butyl layer caused by being constrained between the panel and the constraining layer while the panel is vibrating (bending). When the panel flexes and deforms, the viscoelastic layer naturally resists and wants to “snap” back into place. See Figure 1. (Click to expand)

Figure 1.

ResoNix CLD Squares should be used where you want to cut down on any structure-borne vibration and resonance. Long, flat, and thin panels, like outer door skins, door panels, quarter panels, and roof skins are the biggest offenders. Reducing structure-borne vibration helps lower the overall noise floor of the vehicle while also lowering the resonance caused by sound systems to an acceptable level.  This can result in a faster decay of bass and midbass frequencies.  Slow decay in these frequencies can cause “muddy” sounding bass response or can make it seem like repeated fast bass notes are blending together.  See figure 2. (Click to expand)

Figure 2.

ResoNix CLD Squares are the best choice for all applications where you want to attack structure-borne vibration to reduce undesirable resonance and vibrations. We chose a butyl compound specifically designed for vibration damping and paired it to an aluminum layer thickness that is as stiff as possible, without risking weakening the adhesive bond on contoured panels.

Our detailed how-to guides on how to get the most out of our products can be found in our Reference Information & Guide section. In the meantime, please properly clean the surface of all dirt, grease, and oils before application, and use a roller to properly adhere the CLD Squares to your panel. No heat is necessary.
