DSP Tuning Class Part 1 - Measurement Software, Acoustic Analysis, Using Your Ears, & Putting It All Together

3 Days

Price: $1250.

Instructors: Nick Apicella & Matthew Kim

Earthworks M23 Measurement Microphone & Behringer 2-Channel Audio Interface available at a discounted rate – Highly suggested as this is what we will be teaching with and going over in class.

Part 1 of the ResoNix Sound Solutions Training Course is going to be how to measure acoustic audio signals, how to interpret these measurements, how to use your ears and what to listen for both in objective and subjective situations, and then how to put it all together.

Day 1: Room EQ Wizard & Sound System Measurement Tutorial

On the first day we will start with an in-depth tutorial on how to use a free yet extremely powerful acoustic measurement software, Room EQ Wizard. REW is my preferred measurement software for a large majority of what I do for both acoustical and electrical signal analysis in car audio. Once we go over the hardware and software for measurement and analysis, we will go over different measurement techniques and the differences between them. From there, we will go over interpreting these measurements and what they tell us.

Highlights

. REW Settings, Features, Tools, and Operation

. Microphone & other hardware setup

. How to take accurate measurements with REW

. REW workflow for advanced tuning

. Different acoustic measurement techniques

. How to interpret RTA measurements, including using them to detect and work around acoustic issues

. Using the RTA to detect and correct phase issues

. & More!

Day 2: Utilizing Your Most Powerful Tool: Your Ears!

The second day will be all about using our ears. In my opinion, this is huge. The biggest thing I notice when people “know” how to tune but still aren’t putting together great sounding cars is that they aren’t able to tell what is actually off, regardless of what the measurements show. We will show you examples of what is technically and objectively correct sounding and why, and what certain aspects of a correct sound system present; staging, imaging, tonality, distortion, etc. We will then get into how various technical defects sound. Inverse polarity from sides, through crossovers, speakers out of time, resonances caused by installation, and more. This will be done on a 2-channel bookshelf speaker setup as well as our mock vehicle setup.

Highlights

. Using a 2-channel audio system to determine listeners’ preferences without the subjectivity of brands or other marketing involved

. Going over what a Soundstage is, and what Imaging is, and what creates them

. Using multiple 2-Channel audio systems to demonstrate technically correct and incorrect sounds and what causes them

. Using said 2-channel audio systems to demonstrate how two identical frequency responses can sound very different and going over why

. Taking it to a vehicle – we show you a reference of what a car can sound like when everything is accounted for

. Using our mock-car setup to demonstrate how different speaker locations behave and sound, and what hurdles you can run into with each in a given car

. & More!

Day 3: Putting It All Together.

On the final day, we will be going over using the combination of measurements and by-ear to “finish off” a tune to get it sounding 100%. We will also do in-car listening experiments and show you first-hand what a correct sound system sounds like and what it is capable of, what these by-ear differences can do and how they present themselves, what various technical issues sound like, how different speaker locations sound, and the various pros and cons of said speaker locations.

Highlights

. Going over acoustic issues that are measurable and demonstrating what they sound like and how to work around and treat these issues

. Using our mock-car setup to show you easy methods on how to identify different tuning issues by ear. Timing, phase, levels, and frequency response issues

. Demonstrating the differences between DSP tunes that are done via only various measurement methods vs. those same tunes polished by ear

. Demonstrations and practice of polishing tunes by ear

. & More!

Day 4: Optional.

Stay and hang out, request more assistance, etc.

Part 2 - Advanced DSP Tuning
