  • Do the entire vehicle with as close to 100% coverage with no gaps to the best of your ability if you want to lower the perceived volume of road noise. The headliner will not be possible in most cars due to the weight of a noise barrier, so we suggest our ResoNix Fiber Mat for the headliner location.
  • Speaking of ResoNix Fiber Mat products, these are also suggested to be used IN CONJUNCTION with a noise barrier in order to absorb outside noise that makes it past the noise barrier.
  • Attempting to reduce road noise by only doing a few areas (ex: just the doors) is usually a waste of time, effort, and money. The significant gains come the closer you get to 100% coverage. At minimum, do the entire floor/wheel wells, and treat the sides with a sound absorber such as ResoNix Fiber Mat products to absorb the reflected sound energy that will try to go around the noise barrier, such as ResoNix Barrier or mass loaded vinyl.
  • Having an air gap between the noise barrier, regardless if ResoNix Barrier or the more difficult-to-work-with and less effective Mass Loaded Vinyl, and the panel of your vehicle is important. It is not suggested to use a noise barrier without a decoupling layer between the car and said barrier. That air gap is typically closed-cell foam, which ResoNix Barrier already features. See more in next point.
  • When using ResoNix Barrier, it is not 100% needed to use more foam to achieve a better air gap, but it is never a bad idea to have more cushion for decoupling if there is still plenty of room. If ResoNix Fiber Mat can be used with it, that is even better and will also offer the added benefit of sound absorption.
  • Obviously, be careful and take the proper precautions when working with this product. Once it is installed, it is of no worry, but while working with it, wear gloves and a dust mask. Remember, lead particles only absorbs into the body through mucous membranes. Do not rub eyes, touch mouth, or go digging for gold in your nose while working with this product. Clean up thoroughly afterwards.

As of January 2025, we are only offering the 3mm foam thickness version.

Is ResoNix Barrier easy to install for DIY projects, or should I hire a professional?

ResoNix Barrier is designed to be more user-friendly than traditional MLV barriers. Its thin, moldable design makes it easier to work with, potentially making it suitable for DIY installation. However, installation can be complex and time-consuming, depending on your vehicle and the areas you wish to treat. If you’re not comfortable with the installation process or working with automotive interiors, hiring a professional may be advisable.

How do I properly secure ResoNix Barrier on vertical surfaces?

To securely attach ResoNix Barrier on vertical surfaces, use mechanical fasteners such as riv-nuts or well-nuts. These provide a secure and stable attachment, preventing the barrier from slipping or sagging over time. Avoid using Velcro or adhesives, as the foam outer layers are too soft to hold effectively. For horizontal surfaces, such as vehicle floors underneath carpets, let gravity do its job.

What tools and materials are needed for installing ResoNix Barrier?

To install ResoNix Barrier, you will need:

  • Riv-nuts or well-nuts: For securely attaching the barrier on vertical surfaces.
  • Cutting tools: Utility shears for trimming the material to fit specific areas.

  • Measuring tape and markers: For accurate measurements and markings.
  • Optional materials: Additional closed-cell foam or sound-absorbing materials like ResoNix Fiber Mat for enhanced noise reduction.
Does ResoNix Barrier come with an adhesive backing layer?

No, ResoNix Barrier does not feature an adhesive backing layer. It should be secured using riv-nuts or well-nuts, especially on vertical surfaces. The foam outer layers are too soft to use with Velcro or similar fastening methods. For vehicle floors underneath carpets, let gravity do its job.

Should this be mounted over an existing vapor barrier?

It’s best to remove the existing vapor barrier before installing ResoNix Barrier. Installing over the old vapor barrier can trap moisture between layers and may reduce the effectiveness of the soundproofing. Removing the old barrier allows it to function optimally as both a noise barrier and a new vapor barrier.

Is it safe to use Velcro to attach ResoNix Barrier?

No, it is not recommended to use Velcro to attach ResoNix Barrier. The foam outer layers are too soft to provide a secure hold with Velcro. Instead, use riv-nuts or well-nuts for a reliable and durable installation.

What precautions should I take when handling and installing ResoNix Barrier?

When handling and installing ResoNix Barrier, take the following precautions:

  • Wear gloves: To protect your hands from sharp edges and prevent direct contact with lead.
  • Use a dust mask: To avoid inhaling any particles during cutting or installation.
  • Avoid touching your face: Do not touch your eyes, mouth, or nose while handling the material.
  • Clean thoroughly after installation: Wash your hands and any exposed skin with soap and water after handling.
  • Dispose of waste properly: Collect and dispose of any scraps or debris safely.
Is there a California Proposition 65 warning associated with ResoNix Barrier?

Yes, ResoNix Barrier carries a California Proposition 65 warning. This product contains chemicals, including lead, known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. Users should handle the product with care and follow all safety guidelines.

Can ResoNix Barrier be used in all types of vehicles, including marine and industrial applications?

ResoNix Barrier is primarily designed for automotive use but is also suitable for industrial applications, especially where tight tolerances and complex curves are involved. While it can be used in marine applications, it’s less common, and another product like ResoNix Guardian might be more appropriate for marine environments.

Is it necessary to cover the entire vehicle interior for effective noise reduction?

Noise barriers, especially in automotive applications, are much trickier than other types of sound treatment products. For significant noise reduction, it’s recommended to cover as close to 100% of the vehicle’s interior surfaces as possible. Treating only certain areas, like the doors, may result in minimal improvements. Focusing on the entire floor, wheel wells, and using sound-absorbing materials on the sides can lead to more substantial reductions in road noise.

Before purchasing and starting your installation, I would highly recommend reading our ResoNix Sound Deadening Materials Reference Information & Guide article to understand how and why they work so you can make sure that you install ResoNix Barrier in an effective manner.

Can I use ResoNix Barrier in conjunction with other ResoNix products like Fiber Mat?

Yes, using ResoNix Barrier in conjunction with other ResoNix products like Fiber Mat and CLD Squares can enhance overall noise reduction. While ResoNix Barrier acts as a mass barrier to block noise, ResoNix Fiber Mat absorbs sound that may bypass the barrier. Combining these products provides a comprehensive approach to soundproofing your vehicle.

Why is having a decoupler such as closed cell foam between the noise barrier and the vehicle panel important?

A decoupler between the noise barrier and the vehicle panel is important for effective decoupling. This decoupling prevents vibrations from transferring between surfaces, enhancing the barrier’s ability to block noise. ResoNix Barrier includes integrated closed cell foam layers to facilitate this decoupling.

Why is having an air gap between the noise barrier and the vehicle panel important?

Having an air gap between the noise barrier and the vehicle panel is important because it enhances the barrier’s ability to block sound. The air gap acts like a buffer or cushion that prevents sound vibrations from passing directly from the vehicle’s metal panels to the noise barrier. This separation reduces the transfer of noise and vibrations, making the soundproofing more effective and keeping your vehicle interior quieter.

What is the compressed and uncompressed thickness of ResoNix Barrier?

The uncompressed thickness of ResoNix Barrier is approximately 14mm (0.55 inches) for the version with the 7mm foam layers. The version with the 3mm foam is approximately 7.5mm (0.3 inches). When compressed, the thickness on the 7mm foam can reduce to about 1.06mm (approximately 1/24 inch) and can reduce to 0.5mm (1/50 inch). The lead sheet itself is 1/32 inch (0.8mm) thick.

How does the mass of ResoNix Barrier contribute to its noise-blocking capabilities?

The mass of ResoNix Barrier is a key factor in its noise-blocking capabilities. Sound transmission loss increases with the mass of the barrier; heavier materials are more effective at blocking sound. ResoNix Barrier weighs 2 lbs per square foot, which is double the mass of standard MLV barriers, resulting in superior sound-blocking performance.

Is ResoNix Barrier made in the USA?

Yes, ResoNix Barrier is proudly made in the United States of America. As a matter of fact, it is assembled right here in our warehouse.

How do I clean up after installing ResoNix Barrier to ensure safety?

After installing ResoNix Barrier, follow these clean-up steps:

  • Collect and dispose of scraps: Carefully gather any leftover material and dispose of it properly.
  • Wipe down surfaces: Clean the installation area to remove any residual particles.
  • Wash your hands and tools: Use soap and water to thoroughly clean your hands and any tools used.
Can ResoNix Barrier be installed on the headliner of my car?

Installing ResoNix Barrier on the headliner is generally not recommended due to its weight. The added mass could be too heavy for the headliner structure to support safely. For an easy installation in the headliner area, consider using a lighter sound-absorbing material like ResoNix Fiber Mat. The only time I would recommend Barrier on the roof is if you can mechanically secure it to the roof supports. This will prove to be difficult, but as they say, hard work pays off. You should still supplement the installation of ResoNix Barrier with Fiber Mat in the headliner.

What are the benefits of using the thicker foam version over the thinner one?

The thicker foam version (7mm) provides better decoupling between the barrier layer and the vehicle panels, and a thicker air gap, enhancing the noise reduction capabilities. It is especially beneficial when space allows and is ideal for applications like blocking off access holes on inner door skins. The increased foam thickness improves the overall effectiveness of the barrier by reducing vibration transmission.

To summarize, it allows ResoNix Barrier to block airborne noise more efficiently.

How does ResoNix Barrier compare to other soundproofing materials on the market?

ResoNix Barrier offers several advantages over other soundproofing materials:

  • Higher Mass: At 2 lbs per square foot, it provides superior sound-blocking compared to standard MLV.
  • Thin and Moldable: Its thin profile and flexibility make it easier to install in tight spaces and complex shapes.
  • Integrated Decouplers: The built-in foam layers enhance decoupling without the need for additional materials.
  • Efficiency: Twice as effective as standard MLV due to higher mass and integrated decoupling.
  • Ease of Installation: More user-friendly compared to rigid or thicker alternatives.
