ResoNix Barrier - Modern Replacement For MLV

ResoNix Barrier is a 3-layer, multi-function noise barrier product that is meant to fit in newer cars without the hassle and cuts down on installation time vs traditional noise barrier products such as MLV (Mass Loaded Vinyl). It is a combination of two 3mm thick layers, or 7mm thick layers of our Closed Cell Foam that encapsulates a layer of 1/32″ thick, 2lb per sq/ft lead sheet. ResoNix Barrier is used to block outside noise from entering a given space.

As of January 2024, each sheet is now 54″ x 36″ (13.5 Square Feet), and has the option of 3mm or 7mm foam thickness.

The main purpose of this product is to replace a traditional noise barrier such as mass loaded vinyl. The point of a noise barrier is to block any unwanted noise from entering the cabin of your vehicle. How it does this is very simple. Mass. Mass is the key to BLOCKING noise. No, your buddy’s favorite product with catchy marketing is not actually blocking your outside road noise.

It is also an excellent option to use for custom block-off plates on inner door skins, especially in vehicles that have 3-dimensional inner door skins in which molding an ABS plate would be difficult and time-consuming.

  • The thinner 3mm foam version is best for tight tolerance areas, but the thicker foam version will be better if you can fit it due to better decoupling of the barrier layer, and is especially great for those using this product as block-off plates for access holes on their inner door skin.
  • Do the entire vehicle with as close to 100% coverage with no gaps to the best of your ability if you want to lower the perceived volume of road noise. The headliner will not be possible in most cars due to the weight of a noise barrier, so we suggest our ResoNix Fiber Mat for the headliner location.
  • Speaking of ResoNix Fiber Mat products, these are also suggested to be used IN CONJUNCTION with a noise barrier in order to absorb outside noise that makes it past the noise barrier.
  • Attempting to reduce road noise by only doing a few areas (ex: just the doors) is usually a waste of time, effort, and money. The significant gains come the closer you get to 100% coverage. At minimum, do the entire floor/wheel wells, and treat the sides with a sound absorber such as ResoNix Fiber Mat products to absorb the reflected sound energy that will try to go around the noise barrier, such as ResoNix Barrier or mass loaded vinyl.
  • Having an air gap between the noise barrier, regardless if ResoNix Barrier or the more difficult-to-work-with and less effective Mass Loaded Vinyl, and the panel of your vehicle is important. It is not suggested to use a noise barrier without a decoupling layer between the car and said barrier. That air gap is typically closed-cell foam, which ResoNix Barrier already features. See more in next point.
  • When using ResoNix Barrier, it is not 100% needed to use more foam to achieve a better air gap, but it is never a bad idea to have more cushion for decoupling if there is still plenty of room. If ResoNix Fiber Mat can be used with it, that is even better and will also offer the added benefit of sound absorption.
  • Obviously, be careful and take the proper precautions when working with this product. Once it is installed, it is of no worry, but while working with it, wear gloves and a dust mask. Remember, lead particles only absorbs into the body through mucous membranes. Do not rub eyes, touch mouth, or go digging for gold in your nose while working with this product. Clean up thoroughly afterwards.
